Basketry and beadwork

I am a bead worker and basket maker. The women in my family were always doing some kind of textile work when I was a child and I came to value that kind of continual practice myself. I've been working in these media since very young childhood, almost 40 years now. I took an MFA in textiles from San Francisco State University, mostly focusing on my basket weaving. My basketwork has moved away from more traditional shapes and patterning and towards more dynamic shaping based on geometry and my own quirky sense of shape. I want to create things that people are drawn to touch. My materials are generally wood or bark for the basketry and size 15 beads or smaller for the beadwork. I don’t dye my basketry materials anymore. I’m currently more interested in the richness of the material rather than a color that I can impose.
