Western Abanaki Sokokis

photography, soft pastels, watercolor/gauche, wood and stone carvings

I did a fourth grade book report on the Inuit people. I made an innovative choice of medium and drew and painted the story on a long roll of shelf paper. I got an F in red pen. My mother put on her coat and went to see the teacher. She defended my approach and the unimaginative Miss Long crossed out the F and replaced it with an A minus. I’ll never know what my mom said, but I know she understood about my art.

I was a multi-racial kid raised an Air Force brat. Our family lived all over the east coast, and in Europe. On my own I explored the west and New Hampshire (where I attended University) and ended up settling in Marin.

I’m fascinated working with shapes, line, colors, symbols. My images invite the viewer to experience my message about my indigenous cultural inheritance and values. Often I’ll tell myself a story while I work, it brings the piece alive for me while I strive to depict the daily life of all my peoples. I seek to draw and carve and sculpt and paint the unseen energy surrounding my subject and to capture a moment in the event.
